Untitled III (Can you hear the days in New York go by?)
2024
Two-channel live audio generated by Arduino DHT11 humidity sensor and TouchDesigner
Installation with tree branch, grape seeds, pumpkin seed, hawthorn seed, zucchini stem, eggplant stem, okra stem, tomato stem, white bamboo fragment, and mandarin peel frozen in ice cubes, black tea dyed cotton string, yoghurt glass jar, leaf, and soil
Dimension variable.
Untitled III (Can you hear the days in New York go by?) is a recreation of an installation work. Consisting of melting ice cubes, frozen dried plant scraps, tree branches, soil, and an Arduino humidity and temperature sensor, the work invites you to listen, smell, and watch. Audio comes from generative sound responsive to live humidity data detected and collected by the DHT11 humidity sensor buried in the soil. As ice cubes melt, drops of water permeate the soil below—humidity value increases. As moisture evaporates and matter decomposes with the soil—humidity value decreases. The simple 60 bpm generative sound becomes an auditory record of the evolving process of Untitled No. 2 as a living organism.
The installation was originally conceived in Paris, France in 2023, consisting of hawthorn seeds and tomato vine among others. Moving from Paris to New York, the work becomes a live archive of food consumed on two continents and a record of different periods of my life, reflecting on the attempt to freeze a moment in time when the frozen object itself is in constant flux. In the current version, the ice cubes enclosed these waste parts of fruits and vegetables the artist consumed during the month of April in New York. These consist of plant scraps such as seeds, peels, and stems. They were left to dry, then stored in glass jars. While the work itself fluctuates in response to the environment, as is the perceiver of the moment and the act of collecting.
